With the Atlantic Ocean on its east coast, and the more tranquil Caribbean Sea on its west coast, this small island offers a full range of tropical features. The city of Castries at the north end of St. Lucia has the largest concentration of accommodations and visitor attractions, while the rest of this 27 by 14-mile paradise consists of beaches and rain forests surrounding the 2,000-foot twin peaks of the Pitons. Wild orchids, immense ferns, bird of paradise plants, coconuts, mangos, bananas and papayas are everywhere, and the colorful St. Lucia parrots and other rare tropical birds, fast disappearing from the other islands, still flourish here in their native home. St. Lucia offers everything from golfing around the resort areas, to sailing and diving along the coastal areas, to hiking and bird watching in the interior.
